West Bank Citizenry and Receipt of Individuals of Palestinian Origin
April 11, 2015
After almost 50 years of indifference toward Palestinians exiled from Galilee as a consequence of its 1948 war for independence, Israel has the opportunity to save the lives of thousands who are the descendants of those original refugees. We speak of the 18,000 Palestinians trapped in the Yarmouk refugee camp currently under siege by ISIS as it makes its way to Damascus, Syria. They are the remnant of what was arguably one of the most successful refugee camps in the Middle East, now largely emptied of its 120,000 former residents who fled, starved, or were slaughtered.
“Israel should announce its willingness to have those 18,000 remaining residents of Yarmouk come to the West Bank. There should be no conditions attached to Israel’s benevolent action,” says author and commentator Gershon Baskin, co-chairman of Israel Palestine Creative Regional Initiatives. “We Have the Chance to Do the Right Thing in Yarmouk" (Jerusalem Post) describes the details of how these lives could be saved, with such a grand gesture launching a new era in Israel’s relationship with Palestinians.
